CHICO, Calif-
Andrew Kochevar pumped in a game-high 31 points to lead Sonoma State to an 81-72 overtime win over Menlo College on Saturday evening at the Mac Martin Tournament in Chico. The Seawolves close out their opening weekend with a perfect 2-0 record.
Kochevar was just one point off his career-high of 32 points, which he set against Cal State L.A. last February. He was 13-of-14 from the free throw line on Saturday, making him 20-of-21 from the charity stripe so far this year. Kochevar and teammate
Keith Garner were named to the All-Tournament team.
The Seawolves led for nearly the entire first half, though that lead would never get higher than seven points. SSU's lead got as big as nine, at 40-31, with 14:21 to go in the second half. From there, the Oaks would go on a 15-6 lead to tie the game at 46 with 8:30 left.
Menlo would continue the pressure, taking a five-point lead at 55-50 with just over five minutes to go. SSU was able to tie the game at 64 with just 16 seconds remaining on a
Keith Garner layup.
After a Menlo turnover, SSU had a chance for the win in regulation, but
Ben Washington's three-point attempt was no good.
The Oaks would take a quick lead in the overtime period, but Sonoma would use a 14-4 closing run to escape with the nine-point win.
Several Seawolves had career games on Saturday night, including
Keith Garner, who coupled a 13-point game with nine rebounds.
Kyle Shandera, in his first career start, had a career-high nine rebounds as well.
Brandon Cochran led the Oaks with 31 points and seven rebounds.
Sonoma State opens up conference play next weekend on the road against Cal State L.A. and Cal State Dominguez Hills.
