ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Sonoma State used solid pitching and timely hitting on Wednesday afternoon to sweep a non-conference softball doubleheader from Dominican University at Seawolf Field. The Seawolves won game one 5-2 before taking a 7-5 win in the nightcap. The win lifts SSU to 4-4 on the year while the Penguins drop to 1-3.
Sonoma State got on the board with four in the first against Dominican starter Deena Westrope in the opener. The big hit came on a two-run triple by centerfielder Alex Bright. SSU tacked on another run in the fifth and Domincan scored twice in the sixth to make it a 5-2 Seawolf win.
Lindsay Emmel was brilliant for four innings, striking out seven and allowing just three hits as she earned her first victory of the season.
Simone Brandalise pitched the final three innings for the save.
Claire Hiney and Rachelle Boone each had three hits for the Seawolves and Bright finished 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs. Brittany Hale was the lone Dominican player with two hits.
After Dominican got out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the nightcap, the Seawolves erupted for three runs in the bottom of the inning. The Penguins recaptured the lead in the second with another two-spot, but SSU went ahead for good with three runs in the bottom of the third.
Megan Ochylski had the hot bat for the Seawolves, going 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.
Ashley Eisemann also continued on her tear, going 2-for-3 in game two to raise her batting average to .464 on the season.
Brittany Williams went four innings to pick up her third win of the season. Brandalise closed it out for her second save of the day, and the season.
Sonoma State heads to Moraga tomorrow to take on Saint Mary's. They return home on Saturday to host Humboldt State in the CCAA opener for both teams.
