Kochevar Smashes Record In 22-Point Win

Andrew Kochevar is congratulated on a career night by his teammates

ROHNERT PARK, Calif-  Andrew Kochevar drained a school record nine three-pointers in nine attempts to lead Sonoma State to a 75-53 win over Cal State L.A. on Thursday night at Seawolf Gym.  The junior scored a career-high 32 points and was 11-for-12 from the field on a nearly perfect night.  The win lifts the Seawolves to 12-11, 11-8 CCAA.  The Golden Eagles drop to 10-14, 7-12 CCAA.

Kochevar's nine three-pointers eclipsed the former record of eight set by Jeb Ivey on December 3rd, 1999.  Kochevar also moved to within eight treys of Ryan Hensel's all-time record of 147.

J.T. Tipton scored 11 points to move within three of breaking Creedence Perkins' all-time scoring record.  Tipton's total of 1,516 sits just two behind the total set by Perkins from 1987-91 and sets up an opportunity for memorable night in his final game at Seawolf Gym, Saturday.

Sonoma State jetted to an early 17-8 lead behind four three-pointers by Kochevar in the first eight minutes. Kochevar went on to score 20 of SSU's first 23 points as the Seawolves opened up a 34-22 halftime lead.

The Seawolves shot 52.2% in the second half and limited the Golden Eagles to just 29.2% shooting in the game as they rolled to the comfortable 22 point win.

Jontae Vinson, the leading scorer in the CCAA, was limited to just 13 points on 5-of-22 shooting.  He did grab nine rebounds, but his offensive game was bothered by the intense pressure of Seawolf defenders Jeff Fuller, Barry Weiss, and Kyle Shandera, who combined for seven blocks.

J.T. Tipton had 11 rebounds to go along with his 11 points.  Patrick Mitchell dished out five assists and posted ten points of his own.

Vincent Camper led the Golden Eagles with 17 points.  Imani Mackie had ten rebounds off the bench.

Sonoma State will close out their home season on Saturday night when they host Cal State Bakersfield.
