ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Cal State Bakersfield ended Sonoma State's four-game winning streak with a 68-60 win on Saturday night in Rohnert Park. The loss drops to Seawolves to 13-11, 12-8 CCAA while the 'Runners improve to 21-6, 18-2 CCAA.
Because the 'Runners are transitioning to NCAA Division I status, the loss shouldn't be too damaging for the Seawolves as it won't count as a Division II or West Region loss.
The teams traded the lead back and forth in the first half before CSUB used a 7-0 run to open up a 20-15 lead with 8:35 to go. Bakersfield led for the rest of the first half, though the halftime lead was just two at 30-28.
SSU tied the game at 30-30 and 32-32 just after the break, but CSUB inserted another run, this one of six straight to capture a lead they wouldn't relinquish. Despite never leading again, SSU was able to keep the game within single digits almost the entire way.
Jessi Loring led the 'Runners with 23 points and freshman Florida Siaosi had 13 points and 11 rebounds. CSUB shot an even 50% for the game, holding SSU to 42.9% shooting in the process.
The Seawolves were led by 12 points from
Genny Anderson and
Danae Wellander. Wellander and
Jennifer Russo shared team-high honors with six rebounds each.
The game was the final home appearance for two seniors,
Renee Riberdy and
Nichola Hester. They were honored in a short ceremony before the game.
SSU will close out the regular season on the road next weekend as they make a final push for their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2003-04. The Seawolves are at Cal State Stanislaus on Thursday and Chico State on Friday.
