SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - The Sonoma State women's water polo team got its first win of 2007 against a talented UC Santa Cruz team on Saturday, 12-6. The Banana Slugs are currently ranked No. 10 in the Division III polls. The win came after dropping the morning match, 15-7, to Santa Clara. Six players scored a goal for the Seawolves, four of them scoring multiple goals.
The win was powered by senior, Roxanna McEwen and freshman
Laurel Stricklin who each recorded a hat trick. It was the third time this season that McEwen has scored a team high in goals. For Stricklin it was a fitting way to cap off her Sonoma State career debut. Stricklin did not play in SSU's first three games last weekend. This weekend she scored five total goals, two in the morning game against Santa Clara and a hat trick against the Slugs.
Jenna Bole continued her scoring ways, as she scored twice. She is one of three Seawolves with a team-high six goals. Fershman
Courtney Rider joined the party as well, scoring her first and second goals as a Seawolf. Rider scored on her only two attempts of the day.
Rounding out the scoring for the Seawolves were
Jessica Scott and
Lauran Zambruski who each scored once. Scott also tallied a team-high three assists.
The win improves Sonoma State to 1-4 overall and 1-3 in the Western Water Polo Association. The Seawolves get a week off from competition and will play again in the Cal State Bakersfield Tournament on Saturday, February 7. They will face Cal Baptist in the tournament opener at 10:30 am.
