McGuire Leads Seawolves To Slugfest Win

Chase McGuire was solid at the plate and in the field on Tuesday

ROHNERT PARK, Calif-  Chase McGuire hit a pair of home runs to lead Sonoma State to an 11-8 non-conference baseball win over San Francisco State on Tuesday afternoon at Seawolf Diamond.  The win lifts the Seawolves to 4-0 on the season.  The Gators drop to 0-4.

Sonoma State entered the ABCA National poll at No. 29 this week after their season opening sweep of Cal State Monterey Bay.

San Francisco State struck first with three runs in the top of the first off Seawolf starter Nick O'Brien.  SSU was quick to answer, scoring three of their own in the bottom half of the inning on a three-run homer to right field by McGuire.

SSU tacked on two more in the second, three more in the third, and another in the fourth to go up 9-3, but the Gators wouldn't go away easily.  SF State scored three times in the fifth, then tacked a couple more runs on the board in the sixth to make it a 9-8 game.

However, SSU had enough left in the tank to add a couple of insurance runs, one coming on another McGuire home run in the seventh and another on a couple of Gator errors in the eighth.

McGuire went 2-for-4 with four RBIs in the game.  He had the first two-home run game for Sonoma State since Tyler Wightman did it on March 12th of last season.

While the Gators played the entire game with their starting lineup and used just three pitchers, the Seawolves used reserves at nearly every position and strolled out seven different pitchers.  Nick O'Brien was credited with the win and Josh Priest pitched a perfect ninth for the save.

Nick Tamanich had three hits for the Gators in five at bats.  Derek Simper and Matt Kavanaugh each scored twice.

The Seawolves host Western Oregon on Thursday at 2:00 pm, weather permitting.
