TURLOCK, Calif- For the second straight day Lindsay Emmel struck out twelve batters on her way to a shutout win. This time it was a thrilling 1-0 win over a highly touted Hawaii Pacific squad on Saturday evening at the Mizuno Tournament of Champions in Turlock. The win leaves SSU at 19-24 at the end of the day.
Neither team could get anything generated against Emmel or HPU starter Sherise Musquiz, who matched Emmel pitch for pitch.
Tied after seven innings, the international tiebreaker rule was put in to effect, placing a runner on second base to begin each half of the eighth inning. SSU made the most of this opportunity as Britni Geary was sacrificed over to third, then scored on a Claire Hiney sacrifice fly.
HPU elected not to sacrifice their runner over in the bottom of the eighth, but she got to third on a one out single. Emmel then got the final two batters to pop out and preserve the win.
Sonoma State, at 4-1 in the tournament, wins Pool B of round robin play. They will advances to the Gold Championship bracket where they'll face Seattle University tomorrow at 11:15.
