ROHNERT PARK, Calif- The Sonoma State baseball team clubbed their way to a doubleheader sweep of Cal State San Bernardino with 13-9 and 12-3 wins on Sunday afternoon at Seawolf Diamond in Rohnert Park. The Seawolves launched six home runs on the day to complete a 3-1 series win over the Coyotes, as they improve to 38-6, 21-3 CCAA. CSUSB drops to 22-18, 13-15 CCAA.
The Seawolves improve to 31-2 at home this season. Sunday was also the conclusion of a 15-game home stand in which they went 14-1.
As they have all season long, the Seawolves used the big inning on their way to a game one victory. SSU scored three times in the first inning, but it was an eight-run sixth inning that put the game out of reach. Not even a pinch hit grand slam by CSUSB's Anthony Ross in the eighth inning could put the game in jeopardy.
Tyrese McDaniel had three hits, two of them home runs, and drove in five runs to lead SSU. It was the second straight day that the Seawolves had a player with two home runs (Konrad Thieme turned the trick on Saturday). Tyler Wightman also had three hits and both B.J. Collom and Gino Lavezzo hit home runs for SSU.
Matt Means got the win after tossing four no-hit innings of relief, improving to 2-1 on the season. Cheyne Hann (2-6) was charged with the loss for CSUSB.
In game two, the Seawolves led 3-2 before another eight-run inning, their third in the last three games, blew things open. Tyler Wightman had a home run and Chase McGuire hit his ninth homer to tie him with Eli Rimes for the team lead.
McGuire would finish the game with three hits and four RBIs. Wightman, Konrad Thieme, and Leo Avila also all had two hits for the Seawolves. Nick O'Brien earned the win with a three-inning relief outing to improve to 2-0 on the season. Tim Montoya allowed eight runs, seven of them earned, in 3 2/3 innings for the loss.
SSU, ranked ninth in last week's national poll, will hit the road next weekend for the first time since March 25th. The Seawolves play a four-game series at Cal Poly Pomona starting on Friday.
