Seawolves Clinch CCAA Berth With Split

Chase McGuire had two home runs and seven RBIs in Sunday's split
POMONA, Calif-  The Sonoma State baseball team clinched a berth in the CCAA Championship Tournament on Sunday with a split at Cal Poly Pomona.  The Seawolves won the first game 18-7 before falling in the nightcap 8-6.  The results leave the Seawolves at 41-7, 24-4 CCAA.

The win clinched a berth into the CCAA Tournament for the first time since 2004.  SSU has won the tournament three times since joining the CCAA, in 1999, 2001, and 2003. 

Cal State L.A. swept Cal State Stanislaus in a doubleheader on Sunday to move into a tie for first place with SSU.  The Golden Eagles and Seawolves will meet in a four-game series next weekend at Seawolf Diamond with first place in the CCAA and the West Region on the line.

In game one, the Broncos of Cal Poly Pomona got out to a 7-3 lead before Sonoma State exploded for 15 runs in the seventh and eighth innings.  Travis Babin got the win after throwing 1 2/3 innings of shutout baseball.  On offense, Chase McGuire went 3-for-6 with two runs, five RBIs, and his 10th home run of the season.  Brandon Zenimura was 3-for-6 with three RBIs and B.J. Collom was 3-for-5 with two runs and his 16th double of the year.

In game two, Cal Poly Pomona used a four-run third inning to take a lead they would not relinquish.  Kirk Gross, CPP's leadoff hitter and third baseman, got the start on the mound and got the win after giving up six runs in five innings.  SSU's Matt Garnett was tagged with the loss after surrendering four runs, though just two of them were earned, in 2 2/3 innings.  B.J. Collom continued on his tear with a 2-for-4 game including four RBIs and his seventh round tripper of the season.  Chase McGuire also launched his 11th homer of the year in the loss.

Sonoma State opens up their series with Cal State L.A. next Friday afternoon at Seawolf Diamond.
