ROHNERT PARK, Calif-
Brittany Peterson accounted for the game's only goal in the 79th minute on Friday as Sonoma State edged Cal State Stanislaus in CCAA women's soccer action. The win lifts Sonoma State to 2-0-0 in conference and along with losses to Chico State and SF State, gives SSU a two point lead in the CCAA North Division race. The Seawolves improve to 3-3-0 overall. The Warriors fall to 3-4-1, 1-1-1 CCAA.
Neither team could generate any offense in an uneventful first half of play. SSU had an 8-2 shot advantage, but as head coach Luke Oberkirch commented, the team got off to a slow start without very many promising opportunities.
Though the shot count was in the Warriors' favor for the second half (4-2), the Seawolves seemed to control the tempo of the game. Tempo is one thing...goals are quite another as they were kept out of the net until the 79th minute. It was then that Peterson lofted a ball from deep over the Warrior goalkeeper. It was the second goal of the year for the junior midfielder from Windsor.
"It was a very good result for us today. I felt like we really picked it up and dominated in the second half," said Oberkirch.
Freshman goalkeeper
Courtney Grixti made three saves for her third shutout of the season.
The Seawolves will host the pre-season North Division favorite Chico State Wildcats in a big game on Sunday afternoon. First kick is set for 3:00 pm.
