ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Sonoma State got goals from
Nathan Medina and
Andrew Bailey to blank rival Chico State 2-0 in CCAA men's soccer action in Rohnert Park on Sunday afternoon. The Seawolves stay perfect in CCAA play at 3-0-0 and improve to 4-2-1 overall. The Wildcats fall to 3-6-0, 1-3-0 CCAA.
It was the 12th win in the last 13 games for the Seawolves over the Wildcats.
"I thought we played really well today and that we could have scored more. Our bench came up big again and it was good to get Bailey and Medina back on track," said head coach
Marcus Ziemer.
Despite a 10-2 shot advantage in the first half, the Seawolves entered the break stuck in a 0-0 tie. Said Ziemer, "I knew if we kept on working, good things were going to come." In short time, they did. Just under four minutes into the second half, Medina broke through when he scored off a beautiful cross from
Eric Lafon.
Eric Larson was credited with an assist as well for moving the ball up the sideline to Lafon.
The Seawolves got the capper in the 58th minute when
Andrew Bailey received a perfectly placed
Stuart Gallant pass and beat the goalkeeper to the right.
It was the 6th goal of the season for Bailey and the 32nd of his career, moving him into within one goal of third place on the SSU scoring list (Jeremy Sweet had 33 for SSU in the early 90's).
Brook Johnson and the SSU defense had another fine effort, recording their second shutout of the weekend. The junior from Davis had to make just one save as SSU out shot the Wildcats 20-5.
The Seawolves hit the road for the next two weekends. They'll next see the field on Friday at San Francisco State.
