Seawolves Roll To Ninth Straight Win Over Chico St.

Ben Washington had 19 points to lead the Seawolves on Friday
CHICO, Calif-  The Sonoma State men's basketball team snapped their five-game losing streak with a 90-71 victory over Chico State on Friday evening at Acker Gym in Chico.  It was the ninth consecutive victory for the Seawolves over the Wildcats as they improve to 10-13, 6-11 CCAA.  The Wildcats drop to 6-18, 2-15 CCAA.

The Seawolves are now 14-1 against their long-time rivals since February of 2001.

The Wildcats took the early lead, but SSU slowly reeled them in and then surpassed them for a 46-43 halftime lead.  Chico was quick to tie in the second half, but a 9-0 Seawolf run put all the momentum- and the lead- in SSU's corner.

Chico would get the lead back down to four, but a 13-2 SSU spurt put the game out of reach late in the half.

Ben Washington led the way for SSU with 19 points to go along with four assists and three steals.  His 19 points bettered by one his output in January's win over Chico State.  Steve Cornett posted 17 points and a game-high seven rebounds and Mike Nelson continued his hot shooting with 14 points.

Darroll Phillips had 15 points for the Wildcats.

Chico actually out shot Sonoma 55% to 50% for the game, but a healthy SSU advantage from the free throw line (26 to 9) spelled the difference.

The Seawolves will return to action tomorrow night when they face Cal State Stanislaus.
