ROHNERT PARK, Calif- The Sonoma State softball team opened up the 2008 season in fine fashion on Wednesday afternoon, sweeping Notre Dame de Namur in a non-conference doubleheader at Seawolf Field. The Seawolves won 10-0 in game one before edging the Argonauts 5-4 in the nightcap. The Seawolves start the season at 2-0 while NDNU goes to 3-3 with the defeats.
With two wins, the Seawolves open up the season with a 2-0 record for the first time since 1999.
Sonoma State got a stellar effort from pitcher
Brittany Williams in the opener. The junior scattered seven hits and just one walk over six innings to get the shutout win.
Despite the 10-0 final score, the contest was close until the fifth inning. SSU held on to just a 1-0 lead through four before a wild pitch with one out in the fifth scored
Shyrle Hawes from third with the bases loaded. The next batter,
Dani Lopez, made it a 4-0 SSU lead with a towering home run to left field.
The Seawolves tacked on two more runs in the sixth before the bases were loaded once again. This time,
Ashley Eisemann cleared them with a long grand slam home run to left, ending the game.
In game two, Sonoma State scored a run in the first, but it was countered by an Argonaut run in the second. The score remained tied until the fifth when
Brittany Simao delivered an RBI single and
Megan Ochylski knocked in a couple with a double.
Leading 4-1 in the top of the sixth, the Seawolves let the Argonauts back into it with a couple of errors and then a three-run double by Bryanna Norris.
The Seawolves picked up the winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning on a clutch two-out RBI double from
Britni Geary.
Simone Brandalise went the distance, allowing just the one earned run, for the win in game two.
Megan Ochylski was 4-for-6 in the doubleheader and
Dani Lopez was 3-for-5.
Wednesday's games were originally scheduled to be played at Notre Dame de Namur. They were shifted to Sonoma State because of unplayable conditions at the NDNU field.
The Seawolves will host Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday in their CCAA opener. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
