Sonoma State's Upset Bid Falls Short Against Vulcans

Jeanette Peck posted two wins but it was not enough for Sonoma
ROHNERT PARK, Calif- The No. 43 Sonoma State women's tennis team fell short in their upset bid Thursday afternoon against No. 29 Hawaii-Hilo at the Seawolf Courts, catching the short end of the stick in a tight 5-4 loss. The Seawolves have now lost four of their last five, and find themselves at 5-5 overall.

Sonoma looked primed to take the match during doubles play, reeling off two straight wins in the beginning. Commencing the streak for Sonoma State was the duo of Jeanette Peck and Stephanie Hoffmire as they downed Akimi Kifune and Kari Rodrigues, 8-3. The Seawolves then scored another point, when the pair of Dana Carollo and Haley Hickock defeated the Vulcan twosome of Nicole Campbell and Justine Abella, 8-4. The Vulcans would salvage a victory at No. 1 doubles and avoid the sweep, as Eve Castaing and Christie Pagatpatan teamed to outlast Stephanie Luk and Molly Maguire, 8-6.

In Singles, Hawaii-Hilo came alive, winning four of six singles matches to secure the victory and evade the upset. Sonoma took a 3-1 lead, after Mary Bulich dispatched Rodrigues in straight sets at No. 6 singles 6-0, 6-1. The Vulcans were not deterred and swarmed back, winning the next two matches at No. 1 and No. 2 singles to even the match at 3-3. The Seawolves responded at the No. 4 singles slot, as Peck scored her second victory of the afternoon over Abella in straight sets 6-1, 6-0. Again, Hawaii-Hilo stormed back for two victories at No. 3 and No. 5 to derail the Seawolves, 5-4.

Sonoma State returns to the courts for a non-conference match against Notre Dame de Namur on Mar. 18. First serve at Seawolf Courts is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
