Haley Hickock defeated UC San Diego's No. 2 Natalie Varnay, but Sonoma State lost the rest of its matches at the hands of the Tritons, who won their 60th consecutive conference match on Friday, 8-1. Sonoma State fell to 1-1 overall and 0-1 in the CCAA as UC San Diego, ranked 19th in the nation, won its season opener (1-0, 1-0 CCAA).
"Our girls played very well considering we played one of the best teams in the country, especially since (UC San Diego) hasn't lost a conference match in more than seven years," head coach
Tracey Prince said.
Hickock fell in the first set 6-2, but bounced back and forced the tiebraker with a 6-3 decision over the 45th-ranked Varnay. In the extra set, Hickock took the narrow victory, 10-8.
In the doubles competition, the duo of
Stephanie Luk and
Molly Maguire took the Tritons No. 1 duo of Varnay and Taskeen Bains down to the wire, however, the Tritons reigned supreme, taking the 9-8 victory.
"The girls stepped up to the competition, knowing (the Tritons) were the best in the league," Prince added. "The real test to see where we are at comes up tomorrow when we take on Cal State L.A."
As mentioned, the Seawolves will travel to Los Angeles on Saturday to take on the Golden Eagles at 12 p.m. CSULA has yet to play a match this spring due to wet weather conditions.
