Women's Tennis Rallies Past No. 45 Academy Of Art

Dana Carollo made her case for a regional ranking on Saturday.
ROHNERT PARK, Calif-  Behind an impressive performance in singles play, the Sonoma State women's tennis team fought off a 2-1 deficit after doubles to defeat 45th-ranked Academy of Art 6-3 on Saturday afternoon in Rohnert Park.  The Seawolves see their season record evened out at 1-1 with the big win.

As referenced, the Seawolves didn't get out to a strong start, dropping the Nos. 1 and 2 doubles matches.  The battle at No. 1 was particularly painful as Haley Hickcock and Stephanie Hoffmire fell by a 9-7 score.

Singles play, however, was a different story.  In a group of extremely close contests, three went to third set tiebreakers as the Seawolves took five of six points.

Dana Carollo led the way with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 victory over Kukanda Phukchampa, the region's 7th-ranked singles player.  Another impressive victory was earned at No. 3 by Megan White, who prevailed 7-6 (9-7), 6-1 over the west's 14th-ranked player, Laone Bothshoma.

The Seawolves sealed the victory with triumphs at Nos. 4, 5, and 6 as Brooke McBride, Katya Welborn, and Sheena Johnson all came through with wins.

Sonoma State is back in action on Tuesday when they host Sierra College in a scrimmage.  Their next regular season match is against UC Davis on Friday.
