ROHNERT PARK, Calif. -- After a dominating win at No. 2 doubles,
Stephanie Hoffmire and
Brooke McBride continued their momentum individually and earned hard-fought victories in singles play to push the Sonoma State women's tennis team to a 5-4 triumph over visiting Hawai'i-Hilo on Tuesday afternoon at the SSU Tennis Courts. The Seawolves have won five of their last seven matches, improving to 13-11 overall and 9-9 against in-region opponents.
The duos of Hoffmire/McBride (8-1) and
Lauren Ha/
Sheena Johnson (8-4) set the tone early for Sonoma State, giving the hosts a 2-1 lead at the conclusion of the doubles competition.
Johnson put the Seawolves up 3-1 with a 6-2, 6-3 win in straight sets at No. 6 singles, but the only other decision in straight sets went to the Vulcans, as UHH closed the gap to 3-2. After winning the first set, Hoffmire went back and forth with her opponent in the second set at No. 4 singles, but she was able to emerge victorious in a tiebreaker (6-2, 7-6 (3)) at the end of the frame to put Sonoma State within a point of clinching the match. It was Hoffmire's sixth consecutive singles win.
It came down to McBride and she stepped up to the challenge. After losing the first set, she rallied to win the next two, ultimately giving SSU the clinching fifth point and its second win in three days with scores of 5-7, 6-0, 6-3.
Sonoma State, ranked No. 43 in the ITA/NCAA Division II Poll, will host 21st-ranked UC San Diego in the Seawolves' 2012 home finale on Saturday. SSU will then travel to San Francisco on Sunday to wrap up the season against No. 42 Academy of Art. Both matches will begin at 12:00 p.m.
Results will be posted Wednesday morning.
