Sonoma State 7, Western New Mexico 2
GLENDALE, Ariz. -- On its final day in Arizona, the Sonoma State women's tennis team earned a hard-fought 7-2 victory over Western New Mexico to improve to 4-2 this season. The Seawolves swept through doubles play and grabbed wins at the No. 1, 4, 5 and 6 positions, but not without putting up a fight against the Mustangs, who dropped to 3-2 on the year.
While Sonoma State won all three doubles matches, Western New Mexico would tally at least four points in each. In singles play, half of the lineup endured tiebreaking sets in order to pull out the win, however, straight-set wins by
Sheena Johnson at No. 4 (6-0, 6-1) and
Lauren Ha at No. 6 (6-0, 6-2) would clinch the overall match victory for SSU.
Even with the match decided,
Sara Celma battled for the 6-1, 7-6 (7-2) win at No. 1 and
Lauren Shafer prevailed at No. 5 with an emotional, come-from-behind 2-6, 7-6 (7-4), 10-7 victory for the Seawolves' sixth and seventh points of the day.
Sonoma State will now return home to face 37th-ranked Academy of Art on Saturday. First serve from the SSU Tennis Courts is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
