Women's Tennis Edges UC Santa Cruz, 5-4, In 2013 Home Finale

Sonoma State 5, UC Santa Cruz 4

ROHNERT PARK --
After taking a 2-1 lead in doubles play, the Sonoma State women's tennis team scored three singles wins to end the home portion of its 2013 schedule with a 5-4 victory over visiting UC Santa Cruz on Friday afternoon at the SSU Tennis Courts in Rohnert Park.  The Seawolves improved to 15-9 and will wrap up the season on Saturday at UC Davis.  The Banana Slugs, who are nationally-ranked at No. 12 in Division III, fall to 10-7 on the year.

The duos of Sara Celma/Chloe Jolliff and Lauren Ha/Sheena Johnson earned 8-3 and 8-2 wins, respectively, to put SSU up 2-1 heading into the singles competition.  It wouldn't take long for the host Seawolves to clinch the match as Celma (6-4, 6-2), Megan White (6-2, 6-2) and Lauren Shafer (6-2, 6-3) cruised to straight-set wins.  Jolliff, Johnson and Ha rallied to take their opponents to a third-set tiebreaker, but eventually lost.

Sonoma State travels to Davis on Saturday to face the Division I Aggies in SSU's season finale.  First serve from the Marya Welch Tennis Center is scheduled for 10:30 a.m.
