ROHNERT PARK -- Following the disappointment of their first loss of the 2014 season, the Sonoma State women's soccer team responded in a big way, dominating 25th-ranked Cal State San Bernardino on their way to a 3-0 win on Friday afternoon in Rohnert Park. The 15th-ranked Seawolves (11-1-0, 4-1-0 CCAA) got all three of their goals in the first half as they maintained their spot near the top of the CCAA table. The Coyotes drop their third straight and see their record fall to 9-3-0, 2-3-0 CCAA.
Freshman
McKenzie Maher broke up a 0-0 tie in the 15th minute with her fifth goal of the season (and third in the last two games).
Margi Osmundson and
Sara Van Wagoner were credited with assists for a fine display of teamwork that led to the goal.
The lead was doubled in the 18th minute when
Lauren Curtin deposited a penalty kick into the upper right. It was the team-high ninth goal of the year for the senior from Santa Rosa.
A third and final goal came in the 41st minute on an
Alex Sifuentes header that floated beyond the goalkeeper's reach. Curtin was part of the action again, assisting with a nice feed to Sifuentes.
After a 5-2 shot advantage in the first half, the Seawolves were able to concentrate on defense in the second. Junior goalkeeper
Ashley Luis, making her first start of the season, made three saves on the day, including a pair of outstanding ones in the second half to preserve the shutout.
The Seawolves have now recorded shutouts in 7 of their 12 game this season.
They will try to build on Friday's performance on Sunday when they host Chico State. Gametime is slated for 2:00 pm.
