ROHNERT PARK -- After a scoreless first half,
Lauren Curtin broke the tie just 3:24 into the second half and that's all the Sonoma State women's soccer team would need to defeat visiting Chico State, 1-0, on a hot Sunday afternoon at the Seawolf Soccer Field in Rohnert Park. The Seawolves, ranked 15th in this week's NSCAA Division II Top 25 Poll, jump to 12-1-0 this season and 5-1-0 in the CCAA, three points behind conference-leader Cal State L.A., which remains perfect at 6-0-0. The Wildcats dropped to 6-4-2 (3-2-1 CCAA).
Chico State would outshoot Sonoma State 8-5 in the first half, and 12-10 for the match, but none of the 12 Wildcat shots would get past
Ashley Luis or
Allison Hadidian, both of which played an equal 45 minutes. Luis got the start and made one save, Hadidian saw four shots, but none on target.
In the 49th minute, Curtin corraled a pass from
Margi Osmundson and fired the ball past Chico goalkeeper Brianna Furner and into the net for her team-leading 10th goal of the season. Each team attempted four shots apiece from then on, but only one was on goal (a shot by Osmundson in the 58th minute) and it was stopped by Furner.
It was the eighth shutout by the Seawolf defense this season and it was also the eighth game of the season in which Curtin has scored.
Sonoma State will head south next weekend to face Cal State L.A. on Friday at 4:30 pm and Cal State Dominguez Hills on Sunday at 11:30 am. The Seawolves then return home for their final two home games of the regular season on Oct. 24 (vs UC San Diego) and Oct. 26 (vs Cal Poly Pomona).
