#8 Seawolves Fall Short In Battle Against #16 Golden Eagles

LOS ANGELES  --  In a battle pitting the top two teams in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, Cal State L.A. got a pair of late goals to beat Sonoma State 2-0 and extend their lead atop the table to six points.  The 16th-ranked Golden Eagles turned in one of their finest performances in a spectacular season, running their conference record to 7-0-0 (12-1-1 overall).  The Seawolves (12-2-0, 5-2-0 CCAA), ranked No. 8 in this week's NSCAA national poll, were shut out for the first time this season.

The Seawolves remain alone in second place in the CCAA with 15 points.  Chico State and Cal State San Bernardino are third with 13 with Cal State Stanislaus and Cal Poly Pomona in fifth with 12.

Despite pressure throughout the game, the Seawolves did a fine job keeping the Golden Eagles at bay as the score remained 0-0 until late in the second half.  With exactly 12 minutes remaining, Amalia Arvidsson put CSULA on the board with her team-high eighth goal of the season.

Just 70 seconds later, Heather Williams beat two Sonoma defenders down the sideline before crossing the ball to Andrea Lammers for a header into the corner of the net.

Cal State L.A. outshot Sonoma 17-7 in the game with goalkeeper Ashley Luis pressed into making a season-high eight saves for the Seawolves.

Sonoma State returns to action on Sunday to take on Cal State Dominguez Hills in Carson.
