CARSON, Calif. -- Alex Sifuentes snapped a scoreless tie in the 65th minute and that's all the eighth-ranked Sonoma State women's soccer team would need to defeat host Cal State Dominguez Hills, 1-0, on Sunday at Toro Stadium in Carson. The Seawolves rise to 13-2-0 overall and remain in second place in the CCAA standings with 18 points (6-2-0), six points behind first-place Cal State L.A. (8-0-0) and two points ahead of third place Chico State (5-2-1). The Toros fell to 2-12-1 (2-6-0 CCAA).
Sonoma State dominated the game from first kick, outshooting the hosts 11-1 in the first 45 minute session, forcing Cal State Dominguez Hills goalkeeper Jennifer Ackerly to make four saves in the half.
The Seawolf aggressiveness finally paid dividends in the second half as Sifuentes connected on an unassisted score from 18 yards out that beat Ackerly to her left. When the final whistle blew, SSU had outshot CSUDH 8-2 in the second period for a 19-3 margin in the match. Only one of the three Toro shots on the day was on target, but it was stopped by SSU's
Allison Hadidian, who earned the win in goal, her 10th of the season.
Sonoma State will return to the Seawolf Soccer Field next weekend to play two of its final three regular season matches, beginning with a Friday matchup with UC San Diego at 12:30 pm. The Seawolves will then host Cal Poly Pomona on Sunday at 11:30 am for Senior Day before wrapping up the regular season at SF State the following Thursday (Oct. 30).
