Women's Soccer Stunned By Tritons On Late Goal In 1-0 Loss

(Story by by Craig Lifto, SSU Sports Information)

ROHNERT PARK -- The 15th-ranked Sonoma State women's soccer team had its heart broken when UC San Diego's Izzy Pozurama knocked in the game-winning goal past SSU goalkeeper Ashley Luis with just over seven minutes left in regulation to hand the Seawolves a 1-0 defeat Friday at the Seawolf Soccer Field.

The Seawolves, who entered the weekend at No. 6 in the first official NCAA Division II West Region Poll, dropped to 6-3 in the CCAA and 13-3 overall, while the unranked Tritons improved to 4-3-2 in the CCAA and 7-5-3 overall.  The loss for the Seawolves puts them into a three-way tie for second place in the conference standings with Cal State San Bernardino and Cal Poly Pomona, all three teams with 18 points.

In a match where SSU dominated the action by outshooting the Tritons 18-7, they couldn't get one past Triton goalie Kelcie Brodsky, who finished with six saves.

Still scoreless with under nine minutes remaining in regulation, UCSD's Maile Nilsson passed a long ball up to Jordyn McNutt, who then crossed a pass over to Pozurama running in behind the defense before she took advantage with the 1v1 with Luis at 82:44.  That's all the Tritons would need to upset the Seawolves, avenging a loss to SSU on their home field in La Jolla last season.

Sonoma State returns the soccer field Sunday for their final home match on Senior Day against Cal Poly Pomona at 11:30 am.  The Seawolves' final match of the 2014 regular season will be played at San Francisco State on Thursday at 3 pm.  After the match at SF State, the Seawolves will know their fate for the CCAA playoffs. If they finish in the top two in the conference standings, they will get a bye to the semi-finals to be played in Turlock on Nov. 7.  A finish of third place through sixth place forces them to play in the opening round on Nov. 2 at a site to be determined.
