Golden Goal By Curtin Lifts Seawolves Into CCAA Tournament

SAN FRANCISCO -- Lauren Curtin scored her team-leading 11th goal of the season in the 102nd minute to give the Sonoma State women's soccer team a thrilling 3-2 victory over host San Francisco State in double overtime on Thursday afternoon to clinch a spot in the upcoming CCAA tournament.  The Seawolves rise to 14-4 overall and 7-4 in the CCAA.

With 21 points, Sonoma will play in the first round of the conference tournament as either the No. 4 or No. 5 seed, depending on the outcome of the other four games in the CCAA today, all scheduled to start at 7:00 pm.  The Gators see their season come to an end at 7-9-2 (2-8-1 CCAA).

In order for Sonoma State to be the No. 4 seed and host the first round of the CCAA tournament on Sunday at 12:00 pm, Chico State will have to defeat Cal State San Bernardino at 7:00 pm tonight in Chico.  With any other result (a CSU San Bernardino win or tie), the Seawolves will be the No. 5 seed and will have to travel to an opponent to be determined by a slew of tiebreaking scenarios.

After giving up an early goal and trailing 1-0 at the half, Sonoma responded 12 minutes into the second half with two goals in a span of 59 seconds off the feet of Cecilia Sifuentes and Marissa Marable.  However, just six minutes later, SF State netted the equalizer to knot the score at 2-2.

Despite an onslaught of Seawolf shots at Gator goalkeeper Allison Land at the end of regulation (Sonoma outshot SF State 10-3 in the second half), the game would go into overtime.

In the 98th minute, the Gators would be whistled for a foul in the box, setting up a penalty kick for the Seawolves, but Curtin's attempt at point-blank range was saved by Land, forcing the second overtime.  Curtin didn't waste any time in the second OT period, avenging her earlier miss with the game-winner at 102:24 to send Sonoma State into an on-field celebration.

When the dust settled, the Seawolves had outshot the Gators 20-8 in the match, including 4-0 in the 12+ minutes of overtime.  In fact, the Sonoma State defense only allowed one SF State shot in the final 48 minutes of play.  Allison Hadidian made one save on the day while Land made eight stops, including the save on Curtin's PK attempt in the first overtime.
