Seawolves Tie, But Advance To CCAA Semis With 4-3 Win In PK's

ROHNERT PARK -- Despite tying 2-2 with No. 5 seed Cal State San Bernardino, the No. 4 seed Sonoma State women's soccer team will advance to the CCAA Championship Tournament semifinals in Turlock next weekend after Ashley Luis came up with a huge save on the final shootout attempt by the Coyotes; the Seawolves connected on four of their shootout attempts while the Coyotes netted three.  Both teams are now 14-4-1 on the season.

The Seawolves got on the board early, as Lauren Curtin netted her 12th goal of the season with a header after passes from McKenzie Maher and Sara Van Wagoner and the score would be 1-0 in favor of Sonoma State at the half.  In the second period, the Coyotes' Melanie Aguayo scored twice in a span of 12 minutes to put the visitors up 2-1.  Aguayo first attempted a PK that was saved by Luis, but Aguayo corralled the rebound and tapped it past Luis for the equalizer, then Aguayo fired a rocket through traffic in the box for the 2-1 CSU San Bernardino lead in the 64th minute.

Just five minutes later, Kristal Luna knotted the game up at 2-2 on a free from from beyond the midfield line that bounced three times -- untouched -- past the scrum of players in the box and into the net at 68:30.  After that, both teams took nine combined shots, but none would break the tie and the game would go to overtime.  In the 20 minutes of extra time, the Coyotes outshot the Seawolves 2-0 (all in the first OT), but with the tie score at the end of overtime, the match would be decided in a shootout.

In the shootout, the teams would be tied at 3-3 after each team had four attempts.  Taylor Enzler stepped up and knocked in her attempt to give the Seawolves the lead and moments later, Luis came up big on Paige Kang's attempt to send the Seawolves -- and their fans -- into an on-field celebration.

Cal State San Bernardino, which came into the match ranked No. 21 in the NSCAA Division II Top 25 Poll and No. 3 in the NCAA Division II West Region Poll, did outshoot Sonoma State 15-10 in the match.  Luis made seven saves while her counterpart, CSUSB's Emily Whyte made two stops.

Sonoma State, the No. 6 team in last week's NCAA Division II West Region Poll, will take on top-seeded Cal State L.A. on Friday at 1:30 pm in Turlock where the CCAA semifinals and finals will take place.
