TURLOCK, Calif. -- Despite holding a 15-11 shot advantage in the match, including 10-4 in the opening half, the Sonoma State men's soccer team surrendered two second half goals and lost 2-0 to Cal State Stanislaus on Sunday in Turlock. The Seawolves fall to 6-4-1 overall and 1-2-1 in the CCAA while the Warriors rise to 4-4-2 (2-2-1 CCAA).
After a scoreless first half, SSU was whistled for a foul deep in CSUS territory. On the restart, the Warriors' Gerardo Cazares passed in to Jose Ramirez, who tipped the ball in for the 1-0 Cal State Stanislaus lead at 48:15. Sonoma State nearly tied the match at 63:13 when
Jose Avalos put his head on an
Evan Filipczyk corner kick, but the ball would bang off the post before being cleared by CSU Stanislaus defenders. About 15 minutes later, at 78:42, the hosts took the 2-0 lead when Ramiro Ceja took a pass from Manny Villegas and rifled it past Sonoma State goalkeeper
Sean Taufer.
The Seawolves put pressure on the Warrior defense in the final five minutes, attempting three shots in the final five minutes, but would come up empty.
Brenton Frame and
Zanin Mahic took three shots apiece in the match. Taufer made two saves on the other end of the field.
Sonoma State returns home on Friday to host Cal State San Bernardino at 12:30 pm.
