#14 Seawolves Heartbroken In Double OT Loss At #17 Warriors

TURLOCK, Calif. -- When you put Sonoma State and Cal State Stanislaus on the pitch, especially when both are nationally-ranked, you know you're in for an epic match.  Sunday's titanic battle was nothing less than that, unfortunately, it left the Seawolves stunned.

McKenzie Maher gave the 14th-ranked Sonoma State women's soccer team a 2-0 lead going into the halftime break, then three unanswered goals were scored by 17th-ranked Cal State Stanislaus in the second half before Sara Van Wagoner netted the equalizer with just 22 seconds on the clock in regulation to force overtime.  Then, with under a minute to play in the second overtime, the Warriors' Sabrina Williamson put back a shot off the post by teammate Jade Poon for the sudden-victory goal to cap the come-from-behind 4-3 upset of the previously-undefeated Seawolves at Warrior Stadium in Turlock.

Sonoma suffers its first loss of the 2014 campaign, falling to 10-1-0 overall and 3-1-0 in the CCAA.  CSU Stanislaus now sports the same record (10-1-0, 3-1-0 CCAA) and remain undefeated at home this season (6-0) extending its regular season home winning streak to 17 matches, dating back to the end of the regular season in 2012 when SSU won 2-1.

Two goals by Maher gave the Seawolves a 2-0 lead going into the half before the Stanislaus offense kicked into another gear for the rally while the defense supported by turning the Seawolves away.  Williamson's first goal, a header, came in the 66th minute on a perfectly placed cross by Maryssa McDuffy to cut the deficit in half.

Poon then scored goals within a five-minute window to give the Warriors the lead.  Her first goal, at 82:06, came on a pass from Mikayla Clifford off a defender as Poon knocked it in to tie the score at 2-2.  Then, at 86:54, she gave her team the lead after taking a long pass from Karli Nestler, turning a defender, getting by another Seawolf and dribbling towards the box.  While sliding and falling as a defender approached, Poon blasted a shot past SSU's goalkeeper Allison Hadidian for the 3-2 lead.

However, with 22 seconds left to play, SSU would even the score and send the match into overtime on Van Wagoner's goal during a give-and-go play with Lauren Curtin.

In the extra time, Sonoma State would take two shots in each 10-minute overtime period, holding host Cal State Stanislaus to none in the first OT, but three in the second.  It was the second and third shot by the Warriors that doomed the Seawolves, and it would be Poon and Williamson to provide the dagger.  Poon banged a 20-yard shot off the post with 51 seconds left in the match, but Williamson was there to send it home for the golden goal.

Each team was credited with 22 shots -- Poon took nine of them for Cal State Stanislaus and Maher and Curtin attempted five each for Sonoma State.  Hadidian made four saves in the loss as the sophomore has now lost just six games in 32 career starts as SSU's netminder (22-6-3).  Her counterpart, the Warriors' Chelsea Lewandowski, made five stops.

Sonoma State will look to rebound when it hosts Cal State San Bernardino on Friday at 3:00 pm.  The Coyotes entered play this weekend undefeated (9-0-0) and ranked eighth in the nation, but lost to UC San Diego and Cal State L.A. Friday and Sunday, respectively.
