ROHNERT PARK -- Jabri Jenkins swished two free throws with 3.0 seconds left in regulation to give the Sonoma State men's basketball team a one-point lead, but on the ensuing possession, Pacific Union's Jarron Crump was fouled in the act of a half-court heave with 0.1 seconds on the clock, and moments later, calmly sank his first two free throws as the Pioneers shocked the Seawolves, 67-66, to wrap up the 14th Annual Ron Logsdon Basketball Classic at The Wolves' Den in Rohnert Park. Sonoma fell to 1-1 on the year while Pacific Union earned its first victory of the season, rising to 1-3.
Following the tournament, it was announced that Chico State's Robert Duncan was named the Logsdon Classic Most Valuable Player, leading the team-champion Wildcats to a 2-0 weekend. Jordan Semple and Corey Silverstrom from Chico State, Greg Brown of Pacific Union, Brian McGill of Alaska Anchorage and
Mike Harris from Sonoma State were also named to the All-Tournament Team.
The Seawolves and the Pioneers were unwilling to let the game slip away at any point during the contest -- the largest lead of the game for either team was five points. There were 18 lead changes to go with 10 ties.
JJ Mina led all Seawolf scorers with 18 points on 6 of 10 shooting. Mina also led the Seawolves with six rebounds on the night.
David Ahern added 16 points on 6 of 12 shooting with five rebounds and team-leading five assists. Jenkins had eight points to go with four steals.
Mike Harris contributed 10 points.
A key factor in the Seawolves' loss was being outscored on turnovers 20-10 -- the Seawolves had 18 turnovers to 13 for the Pioneers. The Seawolves outshot the Pioneers by a margin of 50 percent to 44.2 percent for the Pioneers. SSU connected on 35.3 percent of their three-pointers compared with 22.2 percent for PUC. Sonoma won the battle on the glass, 30-27, and had 14 assists to Pacific Union's seven.
The Pioneers were led in scoring by Greg Brown, who had 22 points.
