Davis Goes For 36 Points; Leads Seawolves To Win Over DUC

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. -- James Davis scored a career-high 36 points on 11 for 18 shooting, including seven three-pointers as the Sonoma State men's basketball team held off host Dominican for an 85-82 victory on Tuesday night at the Conley Center in San Rafael.  The Seawolves rise to 2-1 and will enter conference play next Friday (Dec. 5) at home against Cal State San Bernardino.  The Penguins fell to 2-3 this season.

With 6:11 to go in the contest, a Davis three-pointer put Sonoma up by 16 points at 79-63, their largest lead of the night, but Dominican rallied to come within three points at 85-82 with 52 seconds left.  The Seawolves held the ball for the entirety of the 35-second shot clock to take time off the clock, but a missed layup gave the Penguins the ball with 17 seconds left.  After a timeout, Dominican had two three-point attempts but none would find the net and SSU would escape with the narrow victory.

The game featured five ties and nine lead changes, all of which occured in the first half.  The Seawolves took the lead for good on a three-point play by JJ Mina with 3:11 to go in the first half, putting SSU on top with a 30-27 advantage.

Three other Sonoma State players scored in double-figures, including Mina (16 points), Mike Harris (11) and James Slade (10).  As a team, SSU shot 52.0 percent from the floor on 26 of 50, including 10 of 18 from long range.

The Penguins were led by the 20 points of Matt Hayes.  Dominican shot 57.7 percent from the floor, including 19 for 26 (73.1 percent) in the final 20 minutes.

Sonoma State hosts Cal State San Bernardino next Friday (Dec. 5) in The Wolves' Den.  Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 pm.
