Seawolves Fall Short In 2014-15 Season Opener To Menlo Oaks

ROHNERT PARK — The Sonoma State women's basketball team had its 2014-15 regular season opener spoiled with a 54-46 loss to visiting Menlo on Saturday at The Wolves' Den in Rohnert Park.  The Seawolves fell to 0-1 on the season, while the Oaks remain undefeated at 5-0.

The key stretch of the game was when the game was tied at 35 with 11:49 remaining in the second half. The Oaks went on an 8-0 run to open up a 43-35 lead and never looked back.  This was after the Seawolves had a seven-point lead with just under 14:40 to play.  The Oaks whittled the game down to a tie and took over from there.  The rest of the game saw the Oaks' lead grow to as large as 10 and no smaller than six.  The first half of the game was tightly contested throughout.  Sonoma State took a 25-24 advantage into the locker room. The majority of the half showed the Oaks as leading, but the Seawolves were either leading or close most of the half.

Hannah Sourek led all Sonoma State players with 12 points on 3 of 8 shooting.  Sourek also led the Seawolves with eight rebounds. Madison Burroughs and Taylor Acosta each added eight points. Burroughs led the Seawolves with four assists.

The Seawolves shot 25.5 percent while the Oaks shot 34.1 percent for the game. The Seawolves grabbed a 14-8 offensive rebounds advantage, but was only able to convert that into eight points.  Sonoma State took the overall rebound statistic, 38-36.

Jolise Limcaco led all Menlo College scorers with 19 points. Aaliyah Sowards added 13 points.  

The Seawolves next contest is their last exhibition of the season on Sunday at NCAA Division I University of San Francisco.  The matchup at War Memorial Gym begins at 2 pm.
