(Written by Craig Lifto, SSU Sports Information)ROHNERT PARK -- The Sonoma State volleyball team rolled to its third straight victory -- and its 13th win in the last 14 contests -- in a matchup that saw the Seawolves win in straight sets (25-21, 25-16, 25-18) over visiting Cal State East Bay on Friday night at The Wolves' Den. The Seawolves improved to 15-3 in the CCAA and 17-5 overall on the season. The Pioneers fell to 6-13 in the conference and 9-15 overall.
Kelsey Hull played a big part of inching the first-place Seawolves to the CCAA conference title with 18 kills and a .395 hitting percentage to lead all players in both categories. Not to be outdone,
Caylie Seitz had 10 kills to go along with a .368 hitting percentage. Caylie's sister,
Calan Seitz, led the Seawolves with 20 assists.
Madelyn Densberger had a fantastic all-around night, contributing seven kills with 10 digs, four service aces and three blocks, two of which were solo stops.
Kaitlyn Connolly recorded a team-high 11 digs.
One of the most telling statistics of the night was that Sonoma State had a .300 hitting percentage compared to a .080 percentage for the Pioneers. It's a category the Seawolves excel in, as they are second in the CCAA only behind Cal State Bernardino. Sonoma State had nearly half the errors Cal State East Bay did, committing 11 to the Pioneers 20 while leading in the kill department, 41-28.
Early on in the first set, the Pioneers tied the match at six, but a six-point run to make it 19-10 in favor of the Seawolves proved to be crucial. The Pioneers made it interesting at the end of the set by rolling off four straight points to make it 24-21, but that's as close as they would get, losing the set 25-21. In the second set, the Pioneers won the first three points of the set, but the Seawolves chipped away and took a 9-8 lead and never looked back in a 25-16 set victory. The highlight of the second set for the Seawolves was a seven-point run to extend their lead to 21-13. In the final set, the Seawolves fell behind again early in the set, but tied it at 5-5 and capped off the three-set victory in fashion. On three different occasions in the third set, the Seawolves had runs of five points.
Cal State East Bay was led offensively by the 10 kills of Amber Hall.
Sonoma State will have its 2014 regular season home finale on Saturday against Cal State Monterey Bay at 7 pm. It will also be Senior Night as three Seawolf seniors --
Kelsey Hull,
Regan Richert and
Ashley Robinson -- will also be honored in a special pre-match ceremony. After that, the Seawolves have their final three matches of the regular season on the road beginning Tuesday at 7 pm at San Francisco State.
