(Written by Craig Lifto, SSU Sports Information)ROHNERT PARK -- JJ Mina scored 17 of his game-high 21 points in the second half to lead the Sonoma State men's basketball victory to a convincing 75-58 victory over Cal State San Bernardino in Friday's CCAA opener at The Wolves' Den in Rohnert Park. The Seawolves improve to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play while the Coyotes fall to 2-2 and 2-1 in CCAA action.
The Seawolves never trailed in the ballgame, only tying the Coyotes once -- a 4-4 deadlock just 3:40 after tipoff until Mina broke it with a layup 16 seconds later, which kickstarted a 9-0 run for Sonoma at the time. From then on, the game was never in doubt. The Seawolves outscored the Coyotes 13-2 the last 4:26 of the first half to establish a 36-18 lead heading into the locker room. The Coyotes won the second half by a 40-39 margin, but the first half was the story. Sonoma State shot 56.3 percent on the night compared to 40.8 percent for the visiting Coyotes. The Seawolves handily won the battle on the boards by a 37-22 margin.
David Ahern poured in 18 points on 7 of 10 shooting to go with a team-leading three assists.
James Davis contributed 10 points.
Mike Harris was the leading rebounder for the Seawolves, securing nine. Mina grabbed seven rebounds.
The Coyotes were led in scoring by Gilbert Parga, who had 12 points. Isaiah Morton added 10 points on the night for the Coyotes.
Sonoma State plays its next contest on Saturday night at 7:30 pm against Humboldt State at The Wolves' Den.
