(Written by Craig Lifto, SSU Sports Information)ROHNERT PARK -- David Ahern,
James Davis and
Mike Harris each contributed 16 points to cap off a perfect weekend for the Sonoma State men's basketball team as they defeated Humboldt State 80-70 Saturday night at The Wolves' Den. Sonoma State improved their CCAA conference record to 2-0 and 4-1 overall. Humboldt State falls to 0-4 in the CCAA and 3-4 overall.
The game was nip and tuck for most of the first half that saw the Seawolves ahead for most of it. The Lumberjacks only took the lead once at 5-4. The Seawolves largest lead was eight at 33-25 with three minutes left in the half. The second half saw Sonoma State dominate throughout; they never relinquished the lead and saw their lead climb as high as 16 twice near the end of regulation.
The Seawolves shot 52.3 percent on 23 of 44 from the field, but even more impressive was the Seawolves' sharpshooting from long range. The Seawolves connected on 9 of 16 three-pointers (56.3 percent) and a flawless 5 for 5 in the first half. Sonoma State also won the battle of the boards, collecting 31 rebounds to Humboldt State's 24. The Lumberjacks turned over the ball less (21-14) and had more steals (10-4), but the Seawolves' hot-shooting was too much to overcome for the visitors.
JJ Mina completed a stellar weekend with 13 points and eight rebounds to lead the Seawolves in the latter category; Mina had 21 points to pace the Seawolves in Friday night's 75-58 victory over Cal State Bernardino. Mina was the biggest contributor to the fantastic night on three-pointers, hitting 3 of 6 from long range.
Allan Guei led the Lumberjacks with 20 points on the night. Brett McConnell led the team with eight rebounds.
