ROHNERT PARK -- Lauren Curtin scored goals number four and number five on the season and the goalkeeping tandem of
Allison Hadidian and
Ashley Luis collaborated for Sonoma State's sixth straight shutout to start the 2014 season, defeating visiting Academy of Art, 2-0, on Friday at the Seawolf Soccer Field.
The Seawolves, who debuted in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division II Top 25 Poll this week at No. 22, remain perfect at 6-0-0, outscoring their opponents 15-0 thus far. The Urban Knights are still winless on the year at 0-5-1.
While the team surpassed the record for most consecutive shutouts to start a season, the program record for most consecutive shutouts is 10, which was set by the 1991 team. That year, SSU recorded 16 shuouts in the 21 games they played.
While Curtin supplied the offense, the Seawolves once again displayed stifling defense, only allowing two shots to Academy of Art in the entire match. In fact, both shots by the Urban Knights that came in the 69th and 78th minutes came off of free kicks after Seawolf fouls at about 30 yards out. Hadidian made one of the saves, Luis the other.
Offensively, Curtin's first goal came at 20:56 on a free kick from 25 yards out. Then, at 58:27, she connected on a shot from 10 yards out after a
Sara Van Wagoner corner kick for the eventual 2-0 win.
After outshooting AAU 7-0 in the first 45 minutes, SSU unloaded 17 shots in the second half to the visitors' two, ending with a 24-2 shot advantage in the match. Of the 24 shots by the Seawolves, two came off the foot of Hadidian, who was replaced in goal by Luis in the 70th minute, then entered the game as a field player 10 minutes later. In those final 10 minutes, she banged a shot off the post and had another shot blocked that would have found the net if it hadn't.
Curtin led the Sonoma attack with seven total shots, four on goal.
Melissa Lafranchi and
McKenzie Maher each attempted three. They kept Academy of Art netminder Rachael Rempe quite busy, she made 10 saves.
Sonoma State will wrap up its non-conference portion of the 2014 schedule on Sunday when it plays at Notre Dame de Namur at 11:00 am. The Seawolves will then return home next Friday to open CCAA play against Cal State Monterey Bay.
