ROHNERT PARK -- Sonoma State got second half goals from
Lauren Curtin and
Sara Van Wagoner to earn a come-from-behind 3-2 win over Cal State Monterey Bay in the CCAA opener for both teams on Friday afternoon in Rohnert Park. The 20th-ranked Seawolves (8-0-0, 1-0-0 CCAA) gave up multiple goals in a game for the first time this season, but had just enough offense to push their winning streak to eight in a row. The Otters, despite holding a 14-13 advantage in shots attempted, fall to 3-3-0, 0-1-0 CCAA.
Though Otters held a 9-2 shot advantage in the first half, Sonoma would strike first when
Melissa Lafranchi scored in the 37th minute on an assist by
Margi Osmundson. Cal State Monterey Bay would counter just six minutes later when Taylor Greenwood coralled a rebound off a shot from Mariya Fefilova and pushed it into the net.
After the break, the Otters scored again, handing Sonoma State their first deficit of the 2014 season. This time, it was Regan Porteous in the 55th minute, who collected a shot off the post and deposited in the goal.
Not two minutes later, Sonoma found the equalizer when
Lauren Curtin tallied her team-high seventh goal of the year. Dribbling near the end line, Curtin sent a ball across the mouth of the goal that had enough bend in it to trick the keeper and draw the Seawolves level.
The game-winner came from freshman
Sara Van Wagoner, who used tremendous individual to glide the ball over the defense and into the goal. It was her 3rd goal of the season.
Allison Hadidian made six saves in the game as Cal State Monterey Bay managed more than twice as many shots as any opponent has this season against the Seawolves.
The Seawolves are back in action on Sunday when they host Humboldt State.
