ROHNERT PARK -- Caylie Seitz smashed 18 of her game-high 21 kills in the final three sets, as the Sonoma State volleyball team rallied from a 1-0 match deficit to upset 19th-ranked UC San Diego in four sets (22-25, 25-22, 25-19, 25-23) on Friday night at The Wolves' Den. The Seawolves rise above .500 with a 5-4 record overall and a 3-2 mark in the CCAA. The Tritons fell to 6-4 (4-2 CCAA).
All four sets were extremely close from start to finish, totaling 37 ties and 19 lead changes throughout the night, most of which came in the opening frame (17 ties and seven lead changes). It was then that Sonoma State actually held a 20-17 lead after a kill by
Madelyn Densberger, but UC San Diego dug in and scored eight of the next 10 points to take set one 25-22 and the 1-0 match lead. In the second set, the Tritons jumped out to leads of 15-11 and 19-16, but the Seawolves wouldn't go down without a fight, tallying nine of the last 12 points in the set to knot the match at one set apiece with a 25-22 win.
The Seawolves led from start to finish in the third frame (25-19) to take a 2-1 match lead before enduring another see-saw battle in the fourth set. SSU enjoyed a 12-7 lead early on, but UCSD began to chip away, eventually taking a 21-20 lead late. However, a
Regan Richert kill, a
Kaitlyn Connolly service ace and back-to-back unforced errors by Triton hitters put the Seawolves within one point of winning the match at 24-21. UC San Diego hung in to cut its deficit to just one at 24-23, but
Kelsey Hull put the match away with her 13th kill of the night, giving Sonoma State a triumphant 25-23 win and the 3-1 match victory.
Seitz went for 21 kills and three errors on 48 attempts (.375) while both Hull (.212) and Richert (.256) hammered 13 each into the hardwood on the other side of the net. Hull also had a match-high 20 digs as Connolly had 18. As a team offensively, the Seawolves hit .236 with 62 total kills and the defense held the Tritons to just .189 with 55 kills.
Sonoma State returns to the court on Saturday when it hosts Cal Poly Pomona at 7:00 pm in The Wolves' Den.
