BURNABY, BC -- Following a scoreless 90 minutes, it would take extra time to decide a winner and with one minute remaining in the first overtime,
Raad Aljabi connected on a one-timer off of a cross from
Ryan Rohane and buried it in the back of the net to lift the Sonoma State men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory on Sunday against Hawaii-Hilo in Burnaby, BC. It was the Seawolves' (1-1-0) first win of the season and head coach
Marcus Ziemer's 300th career coaching victory as he improves to 300-138-49 in his 24th year as the leader of the SSU program.
From start to finish, Sonoma State dominated every inch of the field, eventually outshooting Hawaii-Hilo 20-9 in the match, including 17-6 in regulation, but Vulcan goalkeepers Erick Lemus and Tyler Hoffman combined for seven saves to keep the Seawolves off the scoreboard through the first 90 minutes. SSU netminder
Sean Taufer also stepped up big on the other end of the pitch, making four stops -- all in the first half -- to keep UHH out of the net prior to overtime.
In the first overtime, both teams stepped up the intensity and fired three shots each, but Sonoma's third shot in the extra frame came off the foot of Aljabi and past Hoffman for the game-winner at 99:00 -- Hoffman had made saves on the previous two SSU shots in overtime; Taufer needed to make one.
Zanin Mahic led all players with four shots, two of which were on goal, while
Raspreet Sandhu attempted three.
Sonoma State will make its 2014 home debut on Thursday when it hosts California Baptist at 5:00 pm at the Seawolf Soccer Field.
