Curtin, Van Wagoner Keep Seawolves Undefeated With 2-0 Win

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. -- Lauren Curtin connected on a penalty kick in the 22nd minute and Sara Van Wagoner scored her second goal in as many games in the 52nd minute helping the Sonoma State women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over host Dominican University of California on Monday afternoon in San Rafael.  The win keeps the Seawolves undefeated at 3-0-0 through their first three matches of 2014 ahead of their home opener on Friday at 3:00 pm against Holy Names.

The scoring got started when Megan Foy found herself 1-on-1 with Dominican goalkeeper Ashley Lentz, but Foy was taken down from behind in the box by Penguins midfielder Stephanie Pawek, setting up the free shot from 12 yards out.  Curtin stepped up to the challenge and buried the kick into the left side of the net while Lentz fell the other way at the 21:51 mark of the first half.

The Seawolves continued to put the pressure on the Penguins offensively, outshooting the hosts 10-1 before halftime, but the score remained 1-0 in favor of Sonoma State at the intermission.  The second half was a bit more evenly matched, but SSU again held the advantage in shots (8-5) and one of its eight shots found the back of the net for a two-goal lead with under 39 minutes left to play in regulation.  Van Wagoner, who led all players with four total shots on the day, fired a shot from 25 yards out and bent it into the upper right corner of the net at 51:21.

Allison Hadidian made a pair of saves for Sonoma in her 63 minutes of work between the posts before Ashley Luis came on for the final 27 to make three stops as the duo teamed up to give the Seawolves their third consecutive shutout to start the season.  Their counterpart, Lentz, stayed busy all afternoon, making nine saves on 18 Seawolf shots, 12 of which came on frame.

Sonoma State will make its home debut on Friday, hosting Holy Names at 3:00 pm.  It will be the first of three straight home matches for the Seawolves, as they will host Cal State Monterey Bay in a non-conference match on Sunday and Academy of Art next Friday (Sept. 19), both at 1:00 pm.
