Hannah Sourek, as the Seawolves won their fourth straight contest, improving to 5-4 overall and 3-2 in the CCAA with a 66-60 victory over visiting Cal State Monterey Bay to open the 2015 calendar year on Friday night at The Wolves' Den. The Otters remain winless in conference action, dropping to 0-5 in the CCAA (2-8 overall).
With the victory, Sonoma State has recorded its first four-game win streak since the 2007-08 season and already has more wins this season than the team accumulated in all of last season.
The Seawolves rode a 9-0 run that started with 4:11 remaining in the game to break a 50-50 tie, sealing the win. It was a close game throughout, however. Sonoma State played from behind most of the first half and fell behind by as many as seven points, but were able to battle back and take the lead on a
Tanner Adams three-pointer with 1:41 left, taking a 25-24 lead into the locker room at the half.
Sonoma State carried the momentum gained from the strong end to the first half to the start of the second half and scored the first six points to build their lead to 31-24. The Otters were able to tie the contest five times in the second half, but never took a lead. The Seawolves hit their free throws at the end of the game to make sure the Otters weren't able to rally.
The Seawolves outshot the Otters 39.7% (23-58) to 34.7% (25-72) for the game. The Seawolves went to the charity-stripe 26 times and made 17 of them for a 65.4%. The Otters, in comparison only went to the line three times and made two of them. Sonoma State outscored Cal State Monterey Bay 34-24 on points in the paint.
Sourek led all scorers with the aforementioned 17 points on 5-7 shooting.
Emilee Osagiede led all rebounders with nine.
Madison Burroughs had 13 points,
Taylor Acosta and Adams each had 10 points.
Victoria Dorn had 11 points on the night to lead the Otters. Jenna Bandy had nine points.
The Seawolves return to action Saturday night against Cal State East Bay at 5:30 p.m. at The Wolves' Den.
