ROHNERT PARK -- Khalid Johnson poured in a career-high 13 points, matching
JJ Mina's output to lead the team in that category as the Sonoma State men's basketball team jumped back into the win column with a convincing 57-44 victory over visiting Cal State L.A. on Friday night at The Wolves' Den. The Seawolves rise to 9-6 overall and 6-5 in the CCAA while the Golden Eagles dropped below .500 at 7-8 and 5-6 in conference action.
The contest was never in doubt, though Cal State L.A. made things interesting late in the second half, cutting a 26-point deficit down to just a seven-point deficit with seven minutes to play, but Sonoma State held strong, scoring eight of the game's final 10 points to secure the victory.
In the opening half, the Seawolves allowed just three made field goals, suffocating the Golden Eagles offense to a miniscule 17.6 percent from the field on 3 of 17 shooting. In fact, CSULA scored more points from the free throw line (8) than they did shooting (7) in the first 20 minutes. Meanwhile, SSU torched the nets at 63.2 percent on 12 of 19 from the hardwood prior to the intermission.
The hot hand continued for the hosts in the second half, but midway through the period, Cal State L.A. went on an 11-0 run to get within the aforementioned seven points at 49-42, but that's as close as the Golden Eagles would get.
Johnson's career-high night came on 4 of 7 shooting (1 of 2 from three-point range) while adding in four rebounds, two steals and one assist. Mina corralled a game-high eight rebounds to go along with his 13 points.
James Davis also scored in double figures, tallying 10, seven of which came from the charity stripe. The Seawolves finished with a 45.9 percent output from the floor on 17 of 37 attempts and had more rebounds (32-20) and steals (5-3) than the Golden Eagles in the ballgame.
Cal State L.A. was led by Chris Martin, who came off the bench to lead all scorers with 14 points. CSULA ended the night connecting on 31.1 percent of its shots after going 11 for 28 (39.3 percent) from the floor in the second half.
Sonoma State returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Cal State Dominguez Hills at The Wolves' Den. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 pm.
