ARCATA, Calif. -- JJ Mina went for season highs of 24 points and 12 rebounds, but the Sonoma State men's basketball team lost a tightly-contested CCAA matchup to host Humboldt State, 81-73, Thursday night at Lumberjack Arena in Arcata. The loss drops the Seawolves under .500 in the CCAA at 6-7 and 9-8 overall. The Lumberjacks jump above .500, improving to 7-6 in the conference and 13-6 overall.
The Seawolves led or were tied for all but 1:56 of the opening half and took a 33-31 lead to the half. The Seawolves scored nine more points than they did in the first half, but the Lumberjacks scored 19 more than in the first half. The Seawolves put up a furious comeback to cut the lead to four with 27 seconds left when Mina sank a three, but the Seawolves had to foul to conserve time and the Lumberjacks hit their last four free throws to settle on the eight-point victory.
Many of the stats were close; Humboldt State outshot Sonoma State 52% to 49%, Humboldt State hit 6-11 three-pointers (54.5%) to Sonoma State's 7-16 (43.8%), and free throws favored Sonoma State 85.7% to 85.2% for Humboldt State. A difference in the statistics is the 19-9 advantage for Humboldt State in points off turnovers. Sonoma State had 18 turnovers to Humboldt State's 10. The Seawolves did out rebound the Lumberjacks, 29-22.
In addition to his season-highs in points and rebounds, Mina was a perfect 6-6 from the free throw line.
Jabri Jenkins tied his career-high with 16 points and also had a perfect night at the charity-stripe going 7-7.
James Davis had 11 points.
Allan Guei led all Humboldt State scorers with 22. Thomas Witzel had 15 points.
Sonoma State returns to the court on Saturday night at Cal State San Bernardino. The CCAA contest will get underway at 7:30 pm.
