Maher Scores Twice As #11 Seawolves Roll Cougars At Home

ROHNERT PARK -- Sara Van Wagoner broke the scoreless tie in the 19th minute before McKenzie Maher scored twice in a three-and-a-half minute span in the second half and also before Alexandra Gonzalez scored just nine minutes into her collegiate debut, leading the 11th-ranked Sonoma State women's soccer team to a 4-0 blowout of visiting Cal State San Marcos on Friday afternoon at the Seawolf Soccer Field.

The Seawolves have won seven straight and are unbeaten in their last 10 matches improving to 9-1-2 overall and 6-0-1 in the CCAA.  They remain in first place in the conference standings with 19 points, but just three points back of Cal State L.A. and UC San Diego, both tied for second place with 16 points.  UC San Diego (9-4-1, 5-3-1 CCAA) comes to town on Sunday.  The Cougars fell to 3-6-4 and 3-4-2 in conference action.

Van Wagoner scored her first goal of the season at the 18:40 mark on an assist by Bella Amyx.  The Seawolves outshot the Cougars 9-1 in the first half (6-0 on goal), but they would hold just a one-goal cushion at the break.  That would change at the 61:34 mark when Maher scored the first of two goals in a 3:36 span.  Sonoma wouldn't let up, however, as Gonzalez, who entered the match for the first time of her career in the 71st minute, put a shot into the back of the net at 79:53 to put the hosts up big, 4-0.

SSU outshot CSUSM 15-6 in the contest, including an 11-1 advantage in shots on goal.  Ashley Luis made one save in her ninth shutout of the season, extending her scoreless streak to 490 minutes, 52 seconds, the longest of the season.  Her counterpart, Allie Jara, made seven saves on the other end of the field.

Sonoma State continues its five-game homestand on Sunday when it hosts second-place UC San Diego at 2:00 pm.
