SAN FRANCISCO -- Kristal Luna buried a free kick from 25 yards out early in the second half to lift the 14th-ranked Sonoma State women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over host San Francisco State on Friday afternoon at Cox Stadium in San Francisco.
The Seawolves have won four straight matches and are unbeaten in their last seven improving to 6-1-2 overall and 4-0-1 in the CCAA. The Gators saw their seven-match unbeaten streak come to an end with the loss, falling to 6-3-1 overall and 2-1-1 in conference play.
After a scoreless first half, one that saw Sonoma outshoot SF State 9-6, Luna broke the scoreless tie at 52:19 after the Gators fouled the Seawolves deep in their own territory. Luna's shot found the upper right corner of the net for her team-leading third goal of the season. Sonoma State finished with a 16-8 shot advantage in the match, including 6-2 on goal.
Ashley Luis made two saves in her CCAA-leading sixth shutout of the season. It also dropped her goals against average to 0.41, which is currently the 15th-best mark in all of Division II this season.
Sonoma State is back in action on Sunday when it travels to Seaside to take on Cal State Monterey Bay at 11:30 am. The Seawolves will then return home for five consecutive matches beginning with a non-conference game against UC Santz Cruz next Friday.
