SEASIDE, Calif. -- Kristal Luna scored in her third straight match on Sunday, and the goal in the 88th minute gave the 14th-ranked Sonoma State soccer team a 1-0 victory over Cal State Monterey Bay in Seaside.
Luna provided both game-winning goals this weekend to keep the Seawolves (7-1-2 overall) unbeaten in CCAA play at 5-0-1 (16 points), six points ahead of three teams tied in second place with 10. The Otters remain winless in conference action at 0-5-0 (3-8-0 overall).
Sonoma has now won five straight matches and is unbeaten in its last eight contests, and during that span, the Seawolves and goalkeeper
Ashley Luis have only allowed two goals in 776 minutes, a goals against average of 0.23 since Sept. 10. Luis continues to lead the CCAA this season in goals against average (0.38), goals against (4), save percentage (.882), and shutouts (7), thanks to another shutout win over the Otters on Sunday in which she faced four shots, but none of them were on goal.
The match was scoreless until 87:32 when
Miriam Bloom launched a free kick into the box where Luna headed the ball up and over Cal State Monterey Bay goalkeeper Victoria Whyte and into the net for the go-ahead (and eventual game-winning) goal. It was her team-leading fourth goal of the season.
Sonoma State will now return home for the next five matches, which will also be the final five home matches of the season, beginning with a non-conference matchup with UC Santa Cruz on Friday at 12:30 pm at the Seawolf Soccer Field. The Seawolves then step back into conference play the following Friday (Oct. 16) when they host CCAA-newcomer Cal State San Marcos.
