Seawolves Rally To Beat #20 Coyotes In Epic Five-Set Match

ROHNERT PARK -- Five Sonoma State women's volleyball players recorded double-digit kills, led by the 20 off the hands of Caylie Seitz, in Friday night's come-from-behind victory in five sets (25-14, 23-25, 22-25, 25-23, 15-12) over 20th-ranked Cal State San Bernardino at The Wolves' Den in Rohnert Park.

Not only did the Seawolves (9-3, 5-1 CCAA) capture sole possession of first place in the CCAA with the victory, they also snapped a 17-match losing streak to the Coyotes (11-3, 4-2 CCAA) on their home floor -- Sonoma hadn't beaten CSU San Bernardino at home since 1992.  It is SSU's fifth straight win and its sixth in the last seven matches.

After the Seawolves took the first set with ease (25-14), both teams engaged in epic battles that saw momentum shifts on every few plays.  All told, SSU and CSUSB played through 31 tie scores and 13 lead changes over the course of the night, six ties and three lead changes in the fifth set alone.  It was the Coyotes to outlast the Seawolves in the second and third sets, taking wins of 25-23 and 25-22 to take a 2-1 match lead.

In the fourth set, Cal State San Bernardino jumped out to a 21-18 lead, but Sonoma State scored five unanswered points to take a 23-21 lead before the two squads traded points the rest of the way, resulting in a 25-23 win for SSU to force the fifth and deciding set.

In the fifth, CSUSB led 5-2 early before SSU reeled off another 5-0 run to force the Coyotes to take a time out.  CSU San Bernardino responded with three straight points of their own to take an 8-7 lead.  At 9-8 in favor of CSUSB, the Seawolves went on a 4-0 run to take a 12-9 lead.  From then on, both teams once again went point for point and it would be Sonoma to earn the hardfought 15-12 win to upset CSU San Bernardino in front of a boisterous crowd in The Wolves' Den.

As a team, the Seawolves hit .298 while holding the Coyotes, who lead the CCAA in hitting percentage, to .277.  Complementing Seitz's 20 kills were Emily Papale with 13, Madelyn Densberger and Lexi Reddick both with 12 and Rachel Andrews, who had a team-high four blocks, added 10 kills.  Kelsey McIntire chipped in with nine kills in 17 attacks without an error for a team-high .529 hitting percentage.

Courtney Seda and Calan Seitz handed out 32 and 30 assists, respectively, while Kaitlyn Connolly had a huge night on defense, making a match-high 25 digs, which is also a career-best.

Sonoma State will return to action on Saturday night when it hosts UC San Diego at 7:00 pm in The Wolves' Den.
