Seawolves Shutout By Warriors At Home On Friday Afternoon

ROHNERT PARK -- The Sonoma State men's soccer team suffered a 2-0 loss to visiting Stanislaus State on Friday afternoon, surrendering a goal late in each half, ending its three-match win streak.

The Seawolves (8-5-2), who entered the week at No. 7 in the first official NCAA Division II West Region rankings, remains in a tie for sixth place in the CCAA standings with 13 points (4-4-1 record) with three regular season matches left to play.  The Warriors, the fifth-ranked team in the region, improved to 12-2-1 overall and 6-2-1 in conference play.

"Stanislaus is a very good team and tough to play against," said SSU head coach Marcus Ziemer.  "They are physical and they don't take any chances in the back.  Once we settled in, I thought we handled them from the run of play, but they scored on two set pieces."

Stanislaus State's Jose Ramirez, who now has eight goals this season, runs his career goals total to 20 with a score in the 42nd minute to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead before half.  Then, late in regulation, the Warriors' Josh Jacobs, a defender, scored his first goal as a Warrior in the 85th minute off of a Gerardo Cazares corner kick. Cazares is the CCAA leader now with seven assists.

For the match, Stanislaus outshot Sonoma 21-14, including 9-6 in on goal attempts.  Russ Klabough had six saves for the Warriors in earning his fifth shutout this season. SSU goalkeeper Mitch North recorded seven saves.

Stanislaus had gone 0-12-2 in matches against Sonoma State played in Rohnert Park before Friday.

"We need to bounce back on Sunday against Cal State East Bay and get back to our winning ways," Ziemer added.  "We are still in the thick of things."

Sonoma State will play its final regular season home game of the season on Sunday when it hosts Cal State East Bay on Senior Day.  Kickoff is set for 2:00 pm.
