Coronel, Seawolves Defeat Pioneers On Senior Day, 3-0

ROHNERT PARK -- Armando Coronel netted a pair of goals and Andrew Ogilvy scored the other as the Sonoma State men's soccer team got back on track with a convincing 3-0 victory over Cal State East Bay on Senior Day at the Seawolf Soccer Field.

The Seawolves have won four of their last five, improving to 9-5-2 overall and 5-4-1 in the CCAA.  The Pioneers fell to 5-10 (3-7 CCAA).

"That was a huge win and a proper send off for our seniors," said SSU head coach Marcus Ziemer.  "Cal State East Bay is a good team and they have been on a roll."

Despite a 7-5 shot disadvantage in the opening half, Sonoma took a 2-0 lead into the halftime break thanks to Coronel's goal at 17:37 and Ogilvy's score at 38:13.

"Our first goal was a beautiful goal at any level," Ziemer said.  "Great combination play in the midfield, then Sean Callahan slipped a nice ball to Coronel and he buried it.  Coronel was very dangerous today."

Both teams would then combine for 23 shots in the final 45 minutes, 13-10 in favor of the Seawolves, and one of the 13 SSU shots found nylon when Coronel recorded his fifth goal of the season at 50:12 to secure the 3-0 win.

Mitch North tied a career-high with 10 saves on Sunday in 77 minutes before giving way to Sean Taufer for the final 13 minutes.  Their counterpart, Adrian Topete, made eight stops on the day, four of which were off the foot of TJ Perez.

"We need to regroup and then get ready for Cal State San Bernadino on Thursday," said Ziemer.

With two matches remaining in the regular season, Sonoma State, which is still fighting for a CCAA playoff spot, will hit the road to take on Cal State San Bernardino on Thursday (12:30 pm) before wrapping up the regular season on Saturday at Cal Poly Pomona (2:00 pm).
