SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. -- TJ Perez buried a shot into the back of the net in the 106th minute to lift the Sonoma State men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory in double overtime, securing the Seawolves (10-5-2, 6-4-1 CCAA) a spot in the upcoming CCAA Championship Tournament for the second time in three seasons. The Coyotes, despite holding a 31-13 shot advantage in the match, fell to 3-9-3 and 1-7-3 in conference play.
With the victory, Sonoma has 19 points in the CCAA standings, currently tied for fourth place with Cal State L.A. and UC San Diego. Cal State L.A. still has two in-conference games to play while UC San Diego has completed its CCAA schedule. As it stands now (as of 4:00 pm Thursday), the sixth and final spot in the CCAA tournament is up for grabs between UC San Diego and Chico State.
Chico State will need to win both games this weekend (tonight against Cal State Monterey Bay and Saturday against San Francisco State, both at home) to secure the final spot, otherwise, UC San Diego will be in.
Cal State Dominguez Hills, Stanislaus State, Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State L.A. and Sonoma State have already clinched a CCAA tournament berth. With too many games still left to be played, too many scenarios remain to project seeding for the tournament, but with respect to SSU, the Seawolves could end up being anywhere from the No. 4 seed (and host a First Round game on Tuesday) to the No. 5 or 6 seed (and play on the road for the First Round).
With six teams making up the CCAA tournament field, the top two seeds will have a bye in the First Round on Tuesday when the No. 3 seed will host the No. 6 seed and the No. 4 seed hosts the No. 5 seed, both games being played at the home pitch of the higher seed. The winners of those games will then face the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds in the semifinals next Friday for the right to play in the CCAA tournament championship game on Sunday. The semifinals and finals are being hosted by Cal Poly Pomona, and the winner of the CCAA tournament will earn the conference's automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.
Perez's sixth goal of the season came just in time, thanks to an assist from
Armando Coronel at 105:13. This after Cal State San Bernardino scored the equalizer with just under 10 minutes left in regulation, but it was Sonoma State to hold a lead for much of the game due in part by senior
Dylan Stafford's first career goal that came just 7:23 into the contest.
"That was a battle," said SSU head coach
Marcus Ziemer. "Cal State San Bernadino's record may not show it, but they are a very good team. If it weren't for
Mitch North making a few incredible saves, we wouldn't have even gotten to overtime."
"We regrouped after (CSUSB scored their) goal and showed a lot of commitment to get the winner," added Ziemer. "
Brenton Frame hit the crossbar and TJ and Armando were dangerous and eventually hooked up for the game winner."
Ziemer finished by saying, "This puts us in the CCAA tourney, but we still have a lot to play for."
For the 20th time in 25 seasons, head coach
Marcus Ziemer has led Sonoma State to double-digit wins, and with an NCAA tournament berth to still play for, the Seawolves will be going for their 11th win of 2015 when they wrap up the regular season on Saturday at Cal Poly Pomona. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
