#8 Seawolves Clinch CCAA Title With 8th Straight Shutout

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. -- On the strength of goals by Sara Van Wagoner and Alex Sifuentes, plus yet another clean sheet from the nation's 3rd-ranked defense, the Sonoma State women's soccer team defeated Cal State East Bay 2-0 in front of an enthusiastic Senior Day crowd.  The win keeps the Seawolves unbeaten in league play and gives them enough points to capture the first CCAA title in the program's history.

The Seawolves improve to 11-1-3 overall and 8-0-2 in the conference.  Their 26 points are four better than second place UC San Diego, however the Tritons have already played all 12 league games.  The next teams on the table, Cal State L.A. and Chico State, are each seven points back, but with only two games remaining, they can't catch the Seawolves.

All the offense Sonoma State needed on Sunday came in the first half.  In the 19th minute Van Wagoner found some open space after a pass from Taylor Enzler and beat the keeper for her 2nd goal of the season.

The Seawolves doubled their lead shortly before the end of the first half when Sifuentes tallied her third goal of the season off a cross from Margi Osmundson.

Sonoma's suffocating defense didn't allow a shot attempt in the first half and they led in shots 16-5 for the game.

Ashley Luis, who entered the weekend ranked second in the nation in goals against average, didn't have to make a single save on her way to her 12th shutout of the season.  She is now tied for the school's single-season record with Kelli Robinson (1985) and Carolyn Wellman (1993).  Her goals against average of 0.25 is currently the top mark in school history as well, besting Wellman's 0.33 from 1991.

The league title is the first by the Sonoma State women's soccer program since 1997, their final year of membership in the Northern California Athletic Conference (NCAC).  Sonoma has finished first in their division six times since joining the CCAA, most recently in 2012.  However, before 2014, the CCAA's champion was crowned via the postseason tournament.  Since moving to a single table format where every team plays each other once, the league's regular season champion is recognized as "CCAA champion".

While the NCAA automatic berth comes from the tournament champion, the Seawolves are in very good position heading into the final two weeks of regular season (the conference tournament is considered regular season for NCAA purposes).  Sonoma was ranked 2nd in the west last week and could be in a position to host with a strong finish.

The Seawolves will close out the CCAA regular season next weekend when they travel to Cal State San Bernardino and Cal Poly Pomona.
